HISTORY
This gun was carried in the civil War by Hoel C. Wright (sometimes spelled Heoll or Hoell). He was a Private in the 16th Michigan Regiment organized at Detroit. It is not known when Hoel C. Wright entered the service, but it is known that he survived the war. Two of his cousins were killed in the Civil War.
Part of the Wright family moved from Vermont to Wisconsin and established the town of Wrightstown, Wisconsin. Later, that same family moved to Greenville, Michigan where they established series prominent citizens in the Greenville area.
The direct line between Hoel C. Wright, his cousins that were killed and this part of the Wright family is not completely known. They all appear to have been cousins of the Wright family group and the great uncle of Euloh (Wright) Albertson and her brother Lyle Wright. They were our neighbors in Greenville.
I helped Euloh around her yard, etc, as she was an elderly widow. One day in about 1952, she asked me to check her attic, as she thought there was a squirrel up there. I didn’t find the animal but I did spy the musket. I mentioned it to Euloh and she asked if I was interested in guns. I assured her that I was a gun nut and had my first 22 rifle at 10 years old.
About a week later, she mentioned that she had talked it over with her brother Lyle and they wanted me to have the gun. She said it had belonged to her great uncle Hoel C. Wright who carried it in the Civil War. I was extremely pleased and tried to make it up to each of them through the years.
I recently contacted Lyle’s daughter, who still lives in Greenville and she verified her great great uncle was Hoel C.Wright and that he did serve in the Civil War.
Unknown to me my wife Betty had the gun reworked and put into firing order. The gunsmith who worked on it said he was startled to find that it was loaded and would have probably fired if a cap had been put on it. Luckily, I had never thought of firing it. I doubt that it has been fired in the last 100 years.
The only reason I am selling this weapon is than we have three sons and I can’t cut it into three pieces. My wife and I are in our eighties and are dispensing with a lot of our collections.
The history is accurate to the best of my knowledge.
